New Years Resolutions 2011!

Ok, I have never once failed to meet a new years resolution. The trick is to never actually make a resolution to begin with but this year I’m giving myself some real mini-challenges and here’s the list to prove it.

Update: Having written my resolutions for 2012, lets see how the 2011 ones went

  1. Find an alternate source of income, even if it is only $100 for the year (I assume my exotic dancing will bring in at least $20 a minute, right?)
Success! Although I did many projects this year, it was putting ads on this site that finally made me a (very small) sum of money
  2. Cut back on sugar So so…I moved to Asia for a bit where eating sugar is a little less common than in Canada. This doesn’t really count as cutting back though.
  3. Improve time management
    • When doing tasks, ignore all interruptions (email, people, etc) for a designated length of time and focus on the task
    • Try to wake up earlier
Fail! Ok, I didn’t really fail here but I didn’t plan enough actions to check off to really prove that my time management had significantly improved
  4. Travel to Japan, learn some Japanese (and buy hello kitty key chains for all my male friends)
Success! Didn’t buy the key chains but definitely had no trouble finding strange and wonderful souveniers to bring back.
  5. Collect some PDU’s for my PMP renewal next year (write an article, possibly do a presentation - that application is way too much work to redo!)
Semi Success! I collected 1 PDU. My article Burn Down Chart Tutorial: Simple Agile Task Tracking was published on the PMI Agile Community of Practice blog
  6. Complete at least two personal coding project
Semi Success! I completed my Stock Options Monitor mobile web app (using knockout, Sencha touch, and jquery). I actually completed some other mobile apps and websites but I did not release them which I guess means I didn’t entirely finish this resolution.
  7. Continue with organizational improvements
    • Convert my backup drive to a network drive and schedule backups Fail!
    • Improve organization of electronic documents (bills, taxes) Success!
    • Use a separate profile for work and play to organize Success!
  8. Continue to floss every day so that it becomes a habit
    Success!
  9. Do at least one fun weekend trip with my parents
Fail! I also found out my father has cancer in the fall (seems like he will be ok but still a shock) so I better make sure I don’t take this one for granted next year
  10. Do stretches every day to correct back pain from sitting at a desk (and try to look cool while doing them)
Fail! Although I haven’t been sitting that much so I don’t have back pain anymore
  11. Read a programming book and write a review in my blog
Success! I read a couple books on algorithms and mention Algorithms (Sedgewick, Wayne) in my 5 second book review post
  12. Exercise at least once a week
Fail! But I’m upping the importance of this one for 2012
  13. Schedule down time every week where I am not trying to solve something, learn something, or being stimulated by technology (computer, TV, etc).
    Nope!
  14. Eat meals on time (Mr. Noodles and Ritz crackers count as meals sometimes due to the high quality ingredients)
    Forgot about this one
  15. Start taking advantage of free air miles/areoplan points
After years of collecting, I finally spent some areoplan points on a trip to Korea

My friend Andrea wrote this article about her freelancing in 2010. I think you might find it interesting :)
