New Years Resolutions 2012!

2011 was a wild ride for me. I started the year off by resigning from my position leading the software development department for an engineering company in Canada with the plan to go travelling. Some of my favourite events for the year are:
  1. Wrote a number of articles for this blog, and got one republished on the PMI Agile Community of Practice blog
  2. Completed some programming projects including releasing a Stock Options Manager Mobile Web App and the source code for a javascript dependency manager
  3. Read some books on algorithms, started competing in TopCoder algorithm competitions
  4. Lived in Asia (Japan specifically), learned a fair bit of a foreign language, met some wonderful people
  5. Started playing a new musical instrument (ukulele)
  6. Started snowshoeing to help me look forward to winter rather than dread it
So, after such a successful year, I figure I’m going to need some pretty good resolutions for 2012 to top it.
  1. Health
    1. Read a book on nutrition
    2. Consistently take my vitamins
    3. Exercise 3 times a week (updated from last year) - I’m running on treadmills or playing squash at least 3 days a week now
    4. Cut back on sweets (continued from last year)
      1. Find new snacks
      2. Bulk cook & freeze snacks
  2. Career/Programming
    1. Launch new website - I’ve launched a fan site for one of my newest hobbies www.UkePlay.org
    2. Apply to talk at a conference
    3. Write an ebook/pamphlet
    4. Make it to div 1 in TopCoder
    5. Continue typing speed practice to 70 WPM
    6. Read a book (there are a couple on public speaking and one on MBA that I am thinking of) - Just as a method to brush up on my WPF, I read Sams Teach Yourself WPF in 24 Hours over a weekend. It didn’t really give a lot of detail but did serve as a refresher.
    7. Write another article for the PMI blog
    8. Double alternative income (right now, it is about $30 per month from various sources)
  3. Personal
    1. Have scheduled me time every week
    2. Be able to play 2 ukulele songs very well
    3. Pass JPLT level N3
    4. Do a weekend trip with my parents
    5. Start sketching
    6. Volunteer for something
